Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore
The Florence Cathedral or the Cattedrale di Santa Maria del Fiore is the main cathedral of Florence, Italy. Its Gothic style construction began in 1296 and was structurally completed by 1436, with the dome engineered by Filippo Brunelleschi.
Brunelleschi's Dome
In 1418, a public competition was announced by the Opera del Duomo for construction of the dome, with a prize of fame and 200 gold florins. The Opera del Duomo ultimately chose Filippo Brunelleschi to be the superintendent of the cupola project.
Crypt of Santa Reparata
The Crypt of Santa Reparata is a small crypt beneath the cathedral with tombs of notable figures and floors made of patterned mosaics. Santa Reparata was the former cathedral of Florence, and the Florence Cathedral was constructed over it.
